Cascading leave is where different types of leave (like sick leave, vacation leave, etc.) are linked together. When an employee's initial leave type is exhausted, the system will automatically apply the next type of leave in the defined sequence without manual intervention.
Example Scenario:
Imagine an employee named Alice who is unwell and takes time off. Here’s how cascading leave would work (prerequisite: ensure that cascading leave is configured in Workday ):
Sick Leave:
Alice applies for 5 days of sick leave.
Workday approves her sick leave request.
Exhausting Sick Leave:
After 5 days, Alice is still unwell and needs more time off.
Alice's sick leave balance is now zero.
Vacation Leave Kicks In:
Workday automatically checks the next type of leave available for Alice.
Since Alice has 10 days of vacation leave left, Workday applies the vacation leave for the additional days needed.
Return to Work:
When Alice recovers and returns to work, the system tracks her return, adjusting her remaining leave balances accordingly.
I hope it make sense and helps to find more use case for this.
